I gave the survey (on paper) to five anesthesiologists (three of whom were residents). The results:
1. 5 Duke Hospital staff members
2. 4 eat 0-2 meals a week in campus eateries
1 eats 3-7 meals a week in campus eateries
3. 5 order in 0-2 meals a week
4. 5 eat 0-2 meals a week at off-campus restaurants
5. 2 eat 8-14 meals a week at home
3 eat more than 15 meals a week at home
6. Preferences for food (first set of numbers in every category is for the first person surveyed, and so forth; first three numbers in every category are the residents):
Pizza: 3, 5, 5, 4, 4
Chinese/Asian: 4, 1, 1, 3, 2
Italian: 2, 2, 3, 1, 1
Mexican: 1, 3, 2, 2, 3
Other: 5, 4, 4, 5, 5
More understandable order:
1) Mexican, Italian, Pizza, Asian, Other
2) Asian, Italian, Mexican, Other, Pizza
3) Asian, Mexican, Italian, Other, Pizza
4) Italian, Mexican, Asian, Pizza, Other
5) Italian, Asian, Mexican, Pizza, Other
7. Other food options they'd prefer:
1) "Healthy options/organic options."
2) "I'd like to see healthy but affordable food available for delivery."
3) "GOOD food. Take-out is greasy and gross usually."
4) N/A
5) "Healthy food."
8. Interest in home-cooked delivery service: 9, 7, 7, 10, 9
9. How much they'd be willing to spend
1) Lunch: 7-10; Dinner: 7-10
2) Lunch: 7-10; Dinner: 15-20
3) Lunch: 5-7; Dinner: 7-10
4) Lunch: 7-10; Dinner: 15-20
5) Lunch: 15-20; Dinner: 15-20
10. Marketing
Facebook advertising: 1, 2, 2, 1, 1
Flyers on campus: 1, 1, 2, 1, 1
Chronicle ad: 3, 2, 1, 1, 1
Menus available on campus: 3, 2, 2, 1, 2
Word of mouth: 3, 4, 3, 1, 2
Availability on food points: N/A
Just from talking to the doctors (and I know, this is a skewed sample), it doesn't seem like they get food ordered on the job much at all. They're so busy during work hours that they have to beg for breaks--it's all they can do to run to the cafeteria and come back. So...I don't know if they'd be a good market for us.
Carolyn will send us more info on the Duke Start-Up Challenge, but we should probably, you know, register on our own soon.
" Yea sure, for now just go to the website and browse around to get a general
idea of what the competition is about. There are definitely some deadlines
coming up as soon as next week. They need an executive summary of your
project by the first week of November. They also strongly encourage
collaborating with graduate students in order to get a well rounded
perspective so any fuqua students, law students, umm anything else that you
guys could think of to collaborate (perhaps people who are getting their
master in social work?). This is a big time commitment but it's very
rewarding if you make it to the finals plus you win money! So yea the
website is www.dukestartupchallenge.org
I'll send you an outline with dates and stuff later on today."
